MS Visborg  – A Pioneer in Sustainable Maritime Transport and Onboard EV Charging

LNG-Powered and Environmentally Conscious

In addition to its EV charging capabilities, MS Visborg is also Destination Gotland’s first RoPax ferry powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). Built at Guangzhou Shipyard International in China, the 200-meter-long vessel reflects the operator’s commitment to reducing emissions on the busy Nynäshamn–Visby route in Sweden.

Visborg has a sister ship under construction, following the same eco-friendly design principles. Both vessels are part of Destination Gotland’s broader initiative to modernize its fleet with greener, future-proof technologies.

Initially scheduled for operation in 2018, MS Visborg began service in early 2019 and is now chartered by Baleària Ferries, continuing to demonstrate the viability of LNG and EV hybrid maritime systems in commercial passenger transport.

units

MS Visborg, a RoPax ferry originally operated by Swedish company Destination Gotland, made history in March 2019 by becoming the world’s first ferry equipped with a fully integrated AC electric vehicle charging system onboard. This innovative installation marked a major milestone in the shift towards greener maritime operations.

The MCP chargers offer smart features such as RFID authentication, DC fault current protection, remote diagnostics, and compatibility with most modern EVs. The system ensures a seamless user experience with real-time monitoring and automated cost allocation.

The charging system onboard MS Visborg consists of:

  • 10 EV charging stations with a total capacity of 220 kW, based on MCP AC units (each 22 kW).
  • 10 Noratel TN-S transformer units, each rated at 20 kVA (IP56 protection).
  • ICU EZ online management system for remote monitoring and control.

Full turnkey installation including safety breakers, cabling, signage, and Type 1/Type 2 charging cables.
